Grading Policy

Mark Twain School for the Talented & Gifted

Twain TAG's grading policy is designed to fairly and accurately reflect student learning and achievement. We use a combination of formative and summative assessments to gauge understanding and mastery of the material. Our goal is to support all Twain students in reaching their full potential through a transparent and supportive grading process.

K – 1 Grading

Report cards for kindergarten-grade 1 will indicate progress toward mastery of student learning standards by content area using the letter grades of E for Excellent/Consistent ProgressS for Satisfactory Progress, and N for Needs Improvement/Additional Time for Learning. For areas identified as Needs Improvement, narrative comments will be provided to indicate targets for growth and to request a parent conference. In kindergarten-grade 1, the reported nine-week grade for each content area will be weighted at 50 percent for classwork and 50 percent for assessments.

I. Grading Categories

Grades will consist of three types of assignments and will be weighted as follows:

Classwork/Assignments

2nd-5th: 55% 6th-8th: 50%

Tests: Unit/Common Assessment

2nd-5th: 20% 6th-8th: 20%

Projects; Composition, Research Paper, Presentation, Report

2nd-5th: 25% 6th-8th: 30%

Projects, Compositions, Research Papers, Presentations, and Reports are optional grades for teachers. If any of these assignments are not included in the 9-week grading period, their weighted percentages will be redistributed into the Classwork/Assignments and Tests categories.

II. Late Work Related to an Absence

Students will be permitted to make up assignments and tests without a grade penalty after an absence. Students will be given at least two school days for every day missed to complete the assignments or tests missed after an absence.

Ex. Work assigned on Tuesday will be due Friday.

III. Accommodations (504 or IEP)

Students that receive extra time as needed accommodation will have the 4 days to submit an assignment without penalty. After 4 days the highest grade that can be obtained is a 70. After 10 days, no assignment will be accepted, and the student will receive a 0 in the grade book. The student must communicate to the teacher that the extra time is needed to complete the assignment. All accommodations will be handled through the child’s Individualized Educational Plan.

Ex. Work assigned on Tuesday will be due Friday.

IV. Late Work

Students that miss the deadline for an assignment will receive a 10 point deduction. After 10 days, no assignment will be accepted, and the student will receive a 0 in the grade book.

Ex. Work assigned on Monday will be due on Wednesday (A day/B day Schedule) It will be considered late with penalty if turned in on Friday.

V. Report Cards & Progress Reports

●      Progress reports are sent home via student every 3-4 weeks

●      Report Cards are sent home via student at the conclusion of a 9 week grading period

●      To monitor your student progress during the grading period, parents can view their student’s grades in the Dallas ISD PowerSchool Parent Portal.

VI. Retesting Policy

●      (K-1)  A student will be permitted to retake any major test that she or he has failed within five school days of the date the failing grade was received and no later than 10 days of the date of the test.

●      (2-8)  To ensure that test grades reflect content mastery, a student will be permitted to retake any major test that he or she has failed within five school days of the date the failing grade was received or no later than 10 days of the date of the test. If the test is passed on the second attempt, the failing grade will be removed from the grade book, and the passing grade will be recorded, with the following exception. When student behavior or actions clearly demonstrate that a major test was failed due to lack of effort or inappropriate behavior, a teacher, with the principal's approval, may assess a grade penalty. The grade penalty will be either the average of the two tests or a 70 (if either the average or the second attempt is above 70). The grade given a student failing the test for the second time will be the higher score earned on either test.

VII. Magnet Removal

A student who does not meet acceptable criteria for academic performance will be subject to dismissal from the magnet program. The student may be returned to his or her home school at the end of the school year. If mandatory, a conference with the campus Principal will be scheduled to create an academic intervention or to submit a recommendation to dismiss a student from the magnet program.

A student may be removed due to academics based on one or more of the following:

●      Academic dishonesty (e.g., plagiarism, cheating, illegal use of technology)

●      Failure of two or more core or cluster classes for the school year

●      Failure to meet promotion requirements for the academic year prior to attending summer school

* Homework will only be utilized for extra credit purposes but we encourage all students to take advantage of additional learning. *
